Main Two Components of a Car

An overview of a car’s chassis and body

A car is mainly split into two parts: the chassis and the body. The chassis includes the frame and mechanical components of the car while the car body usually refers to the outer shell. To give examples, the chassis includes the engine, brakes, transmission, suspension, and steering, while the car body includes doors, trunks, and windows.

Among the components of the chassis, the engine is the most important because it is what powers the entire vehicle; without an engine, the wheels don’t have energy to go forward. The engine functions by converting fuel with a fixed cylinder and a moving piston. There are several types of engines, with the three main categories being diesel and gasoline internal combustion, electric, and hybrid.

As for internal combustion engines (ICE), the fuel tanks include spark ignition engines for gasoline, compression ignition for diesel, flex fuel engines that run on ethanol or multiple types of fuel, and natural gas engines that run on compressed or liquified natural gas.

In order to combust the fuel, there are four stroke engines and two stroke engines. The different cycle engines describe how many strokes are required to complete a power cycle. The four stroke cycle is most common in cars because they intake, compress, combust, and then exhaust in separate strokes. Following the different stroke cycles, there are different engine configurations that embody the four stroke cycle: inline engines, V engines, flat engines, and rotary engines.

Inline engines have cylinders arranged in one line, V engines have cylinders arranged in a “V” shape, Flat engines have cylinders arranged horizontally, and rotary engines utilize the rotary design instead of traditional cylinders.

To convert electrical energy to use in a mechanical engine, traction motors have been designed precisely for electric vehicles and trains so that there is ample torque and power. Other electrical engines for machines and household appliances include alternating current and direct current motors.

As for hybrid car engines, there are full hybrid, mild hybrid, plug-in hybrid. The full hybrid engine can run on an internal combustion; the electric motor; and both, the mild hybrid can run an internal combustion engine that is assisted by the electric motor, and the plug-in-hybrid can be charged from an electric source to drive longer electrically-powered distances.

Regarding the car body, it consists of a roof, doors, fenders, hood, trunk, quarter panels, windows, body panels, and bumpers. Front fenders are one of the most important parts because it provides style, safety, and performance; aerodynamics, aesthetic appeal, collision safety, and structural integrity are all developed by the front fenders. The front fender gives character to the design of the car. For example, a McLaren 720S’s front fender is contrasted by Ferrari LaFerrari’s front fender. The McLaren’s front fender is characterized by the smooth and flowing design, whereas the LaFerrari’s front fender showcases its aggressive and bold character.

Ultimately, through a chassis and car body, a functioning mobile is created to help people conveniently commute from one place to another.
